Microcement Application

Microcement stairs

Seamless staircases with no nosing edges to chip and no carpet to wear through. Slip-resistant treads that flow into the surrounding floor.

Why choose microcement for stairs

Stairs are the most-walked surface in any home. Wood treads dent and discolour at the edges, carpet wears through in stripes, and tile chips at the nosing. Microcement stairs have no edge to chip and no carpet to wear — every tread, riser and stringer is one continuous sealed surface.

We apply over your existing concrete, wood, or metal staircase at 2–3 mm thickness. The surface is sealed with a slip-resistant top sealer specifically rated for staircase use, and the finish flows seamlessly onto the surrounding floor for a fully integrated look.

Key benefits

Slip-resistant treads

Specialised top sealer adds grip across all treads — meets staircase safety standards without changing the finish appearance.

No nosing edges to chip

The continuous finish includes a soft radius nosing instead of a sharp tile edge — far less prone to impact damage.

Flows into floor finish

When floors are also microcement, the stair and floor read as one continuous plane with no transition strip.

Apply over existing stairs

Concrete, wood, or metal staircases all accept the finish after preparation. No demolition or rebuild.

Hard-wearing under traffic

Engineered for the high-impact, high-frequency wear of staircase use. Resists abrasion and concentrated foot traffic.

Architectural minimalism

Stairs read as one calm form — popular with architects in modern open-tread and floating-stair designs.

Where it works

  • Concrete staircases — internal and external
  • Existing wood staircases (closed string and open tread)
  • Floating and cantilevered modern staircases
  • Spiral and curved staircases
  • Commercial and retail staircases with heavy footfall
Finishes

Three signature finishes

All three finishes are available in any of our 40+ standard colours. Choose by tactility — smooth for gallery-like calm, stucco for handcrafted warmth, coarse for industrial character.

Smooth microcement finish

Smooth

The most refined of the three styles. Minimal visible trowel marks for a near-uniform appearance — best for contemporary, minimalist interiors.

Stucco effect microcement finish

Stucco effect

Visible hand-troweled texture with subtle cloud-like tonal variations. The classic Venetian plaster character — depth without busy pattern.

Coarse effect microcement finish

Coarse effect

Pronounced grain and tactile surface texture. The most expressive finish — best for industrial, rustic or characterful interiors.

How it works

Our installation process

From first site visit to final sealed surface, every project follows the same four-stage process. Exact timelines depend on the size of the area and substrate condition — we'll confirm a schedule with your quote.

  1. 01 Free

    Site visit & quote

Free in-person consultation across London & Surrey. We assess the substrate, talk through colour and finish options, and provide a fixed-price quote.

  2. 02

    Surface preparation

Existing substrate cleaned, repaired, primed and reinforced with fibreglass mesh where required. The hidden step that decides everything.

  3. 03

    Microcement application

Two base coats and two finish coats applied by hand at ~2–3mm total thickness. Each layer is troweled and sanded to your chosen texture.

  4. 04

    Sealing & protection

Pre-sealer and topsealer applied to lock in colour and create a fully washable, water-resistant surface. Cure time 24–48 hours before normal use.

Common questions

Microcement stairs — FAQ

Can microcement be applied over my existing wooden staircase?
Yes. We screw and glue a thin substrate board over each tread and riser to create a stable rigid surface, then apply the microcement coats. The original staircase structure stays in place.
Will the stairs be slippery?
No — we use a slip-resistant top sealer rated for staircase use. The grip exceeds minimum staircase safety standards while keeping the same monolithic visual look.
What about the nosing edge?
Microcement is finished with a soft radius nosing — visually cleaner than a tile edge, and far less prone to impact chipping. No metal edge strip needed.
Does it work on floating or open-tread stairs?
Yes — open-tread, cantilevered, and spiral stairs all accept the finish. The seamless monolithic look actually emphasises the architectural form better than tile or wood.
How loud are microcement stairs?
Similar to concrete or stone stairs — quieter than hard wood (no creaking joints) but not as soft underfoot as carpet. A runner can be added if extra acoustic dampening is desired.
